He chose to keep his family name, and maybe that's when it all began to fall apart.

Jungkook never saw his family as broken. It was smaller than most, many years spent with only his mom for company, but small wasn't the same as broken, and he never wanted for love. But his mother wanted more for him. Her Jungkook, he was so smart and hard-working, but she couldn't afford to send him to the best schools. Couldn't be a father in that traditional sense — the one who's supposed to prepare him for the day that he will enlist and truly become a man.

He was happy for her when she met his new father. Their wedding day was beautiful, two families becoming a whole, gaining a father and a brother in a single breath. A new house, a new neighborhood. When they offered to add him to the family registry, the decision wasn't an easy one. But something felt wrong about the act of erasing his birth father — his dad — and leaving no trace that he had ever been.

So Jeon Jungkook remained standing, just in time for pieces of him to splinter off. The first time father slapped him for talking back. The first time his brother punched him under the guise of a hug. He refuses to leave, though. Maybe if he tries hard enough to hold everything together, it will still paint the picture of what his mother wished for him.
